A huge success in the UK this new comedy series is set amongst a motley crew of British package tourists at The Solana, an all inclusive hotel complex in one of the more infamous destinations on the Costa Blanca – Benidorm.
The Solana apartments play host to a variety of clientele, all looking for one thing; value for money; and they certainly get it. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, all snacks, alcohol and soft drinks are included in the holiday, not forgetting “quality” entertainment in The Red Lion cabaret bar. More reliant on the minutiae of working class characters than traditional sitcom set ups, ‘Benidorm’ probably has more in common with ‘The Royle Family’ than ‘Duty Free’.
Prominent among the Brits abroad are: Geoff a sad-sack quiz fanatic who has come on holiday with his mum and spends all day lounging by the pool while being tested by her on European capitals and American presidents; and Mick the paterfamilias of the Garveys, a rowdy Yorkshire clan making full use of the limitless free booze on their first holiday overseas.
